The story of Philip Pelusi is a culmination of an adventure that began in 1965 with his first salon and four designers, just one year after graduating from the Pittsburgh Beauty Academy. By 1976, with an expanded staff of 30 designers, a trademarked haircutting technique known as Volumetrics and a self-designed training program in place, Philip opened his second salon.
Widely recognized for his skincare approach to hair care, Philip’s process begins with the hair follicle and an emphasis on damage reduction, overall strength and enhancing the hairs’ natural attributes. His passion for developing products, juxtaposed with his love of nature, has led him to combine the best of nature’s sustainable ingredients with the most advance science. Philip devises and engineers products to satisfy a wide variety of hair issues facing today’s educated customers. In March 2008, Philip introduced his most advanced product line yet: Tela Beauty Organics, an organic hair care line including shampoos, conditioners and styling products.
In 2005, InStyle magazine named Philip one of the top haircutters in the country adding to his accolades as Top Designer of the World by Lo Zeffiro and World Master by the Art and Fashion Group International. Today, Philip works with more than 1500 designers across the country, including his latest venture in New York City: Tela Design Studio where he develops and assesses new product formulations and invites world class designers to call home.
Philip has always expressed a deep commitment to the arts, through his own creative photography, his involvement with dance and his support of the Warhol Museum. While Philip was developing his salons, he also garnered attention as a photographer for his aesthetic illustrations of his hair designs and his original eye in capturing the ambience of fashion photography. This has led to invitations and exhibitions from around the world in such places as Canada, Italy and Japan.
